The 3 Phases of Video Production
Your end-to-end guide to the video production process
There is a lot more to video production that can meet the eye. While a video production team may only spend a couple of hours with you on site, the majority of our work happens behinds the scenes.
The time spent working on a project prior to filming is called pre-production.
The phase where everyone is on location to film the video is called the production phase.
Lastly, the time spent working a project after filming is called post-production.
Each of these three phases are equally important in the creation of an effective video.
Pre-production is the planning of all areas of the video to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day. The level of pre-production needed changes from project to project.
Below are the services we offer during the pre-production phase.
The message, concept and shot list are then finalised, the location acquired and the talent hired. Next, a run sheet with the schedule for the shoot is written up. Pre-production may take anywhere from a couple of days to sometimes months to pull together. This depends on the complexity of the shoot. If filming for a television commercial, pre-production also includes getting the ad concept approved by the relevant regulatory bodies.
It is important when planning your video projects to take into account time for planning. Effective Pre-Production ensures an end product that meets the expectations of all involved – in look, feel, messaging and budget.
This moves us into the next phase of Video Production – the Production phase.
The Production Phase includes the days where the film crew is on site and filming the content. Production services may include:
The crew works together using the tools created during the pre-production phase. These tools allow the team to produce visuals that capture the look, feel and messaging required for the video.
After filming has completed, we enter what is typically the longest phase of the production process – the Post Production phase.
Post -Production services are listed below.
During post-production, the footage is put together to produce the final video. Music is added, animations and graphics are developed and incorporated, and colour and sound is corrected. The video is reviewed to ensure that the first cut aligns with the concept and plannings from pre-production. The initial cut is then exported and uploaded to the client. This part on its own can take several hours due to the file size.
From here the client will review the video and may ask for changes. If the change is included in the scope of the project, then these will be made. If not, these changes will be reviewed by the production team and a quote for the changes will be supplied.
Once final approval is provided, the video is delivered to the client and/or uploaded to the broadcaster.
